Tabcorp Birdcage Marquee

Thank you so much for all of your hard work ladies, and the weeks leading up! I’m very lucky to get to work with you both. Bring on tomorrow!

Event Brief

To design and produce the Tabcorp Birdcage Marquee for the iconic Spring Racing Carnival in Melbourne.

To build on the success of the previous seven years of executions and continue to surprise and delight guests and elevate their racing experience.

The Result

Upon arrival at the Tabcorp Birdcage Marquee, invited guests and passers-by were immediately awe struck by the oversized hydrangeas in blue and lilac hand-painted onto the façade of the bespoke structure. The mural was commissioned for the event and took 12 artists over 200 hours to create. The impact was powerful and immediately became the backdrop for many photos during the racing season.

To encourage further consumer engagement, a spectacular floral wall was nestled into the corner of the marquee structure and set on a raised platform. From here everyone in the Birdcage could take advantage of the beautiful spot for a photo.

In celebration of spring the live floral installations continued inside the marquee. A feature media wall awaited guests at the top of the entrance staircase and displayed an abundance of blooms including live hydrangeas especially grown for the event to ensure the perfect shade of blue was obtained.

To continue the hydrangea theme, Event Planet commissioned artists to design a floral print from which reams of material were manufactured to create scarves and headbands for the hostesses and feature panels on the wait staff aprons.

Acclaimed Melbourne Chef Guy Grossi took charge of the custom-built café where he personally prepared a delicious selection of Italian specialty dishes to accompany the Champagne and cocktails available throughout the day.

To tempt the sweet tooth in the afternoon, Darren Purchese served guests an indulgent dessert selection, which was monochromatically colour themed to each race day. This was topped off with a Pavlova station where guests could choose their topping (or three) from an array of favourites including classic Passionfruit to the decadent Champagne Strawberries with White Chocolate and Rose Petal Shards.

The Tabcorp Marquee also delivered in terms of technology with punters not missing an inch of the racing action at Flemington or the interstate tracks. A mega split screen wall live streamed racing content from all over Australia and switched to full screen mode for the races at Flemington. Electronic betting terminals were readily available around the marquee complete with a live tote.

The marquee was certainly the place to be for the expert tips with the live ‘punter previews’ being filmed on site as well as Network 10 broadcasting multiple live crosses during the carnival.
